Interpersonal Communicaiton

This week in com101 we were lectured on interpersonal and group communication and as per instructions we are to reflect, find a article and relate it to the material we have learned so far.

The lecturer, as my fellow classmates will nod their heads in agreement, talked about the attributes of interpersonal communication in terms of relationships....the best kind, what attracts us and so forth.

In today's blog i will be discussing something slightly different. Instead of talking about the best kind of interpersonal communication relationship, I'm gonna talk about the ugly side of it.

Take for example the article from bbc.com (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/8073230.stm) titled "Rihanna may testify against Brown".

As you might or not know these two ( Rihanna and Brown) are from the music industry and were dating... recall our notes....
Relational formation and development
• Similarity
– Tendency to form relationship with those we perceive as similar to us as it
• Reduces our uncertainties about them
• Reduces the associated risks in the relationship
• Serves as a form of social validation

Sooo anyways.... something bad happened a while back and it seemed that communication between the two broke down, both verbally and non verbally.
It is alleged that they both started arguing and it got so bad that he ended up beating her (non verbal communication)
could you say that brown saw the relationship in a competency relation ship and as a result ended up getting jealous because she was a bigger star?
(• Competency
– Form relationships with those who are competent (excel)
• Its importance is subjective, depending on the individuals and the types of competency
– Competency can have negative impact as well)

com101 blog 1 : Perspectives of Communication

• A perspective is a coherent set of assumptions
about the way a process operates
• Four perspectives of communication
– Psychological
– Social constructionist
– Pragmatic
– Cultural studies

For this blog i will focus on cultural studies perspective in light of the article from http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/8066129.stm about the Tamil Tigers press release saying that their leader was in fact dead.

If one looks at the whole Sri Lankan and Tamil conflict over the last few weeks the interact can been seen as well as interdependent between the two parties. The pragmatic model of communication (figure 2.1) shows a outline of the similar pattern that had happened between the Sri Lankan govt and the Tamil Tigers about its now dead leader.

My point is that media can change and or question our perspectives and in doing so influence our beliefs. one should always keep your guard up when watching the news and or watch different channels to get a different perspective.
