Finally our last blog.... anyway...
Todays blog is gonna be about my personal response to convergence of technology and how it effects my communication.
Personally i think that the convergence of technology and communication is a good thing. Todays PDA's and hand phones, primary tools to communication, verbal or computer mediated, is something of a godsend. I am and never will be a person who writes letters via snail mail, mainly because...I dont. But with the access to the internet, camera and other funtions on my phone it has become a very important tool for me to communicate to family in india, nepal,UK and other parts of the globe. Mind you it's not just family that i can instantly contantact, friends too.
Communication via this medium is not only outgoing for me, for i like to read the news, and as for someone who doesnt subscribe to newspapers, reading headlines online via my phone is extreamly convenient! Its a fantastic tool to recieve communication also. ie take example of hearing of the death of MJ. God rest his soul.
However with the convergence of all this media there are a few downers about it. Because we tend to store more and more information in one device these devices become more and more senstitive. Take for example if you lost your laptop!! How much info that would you be able to replace...for me not much...i would lose 3 years worth of uni work and the current work that i'm doing. With that in mind these divices phones or laptops could be high targets of information that people might want to steal. How safe are our gadgets?? What if you lost your phone? How badly would it effect your communication?
Anyway do you think convergence is a good thing? looking at the pros and cons,....its more pro for me.

definitely the flip side comes together with all the advantages technology has brought us! losing your handphone = losing your privacy, just to name a few. however, i believe that most of us have already past the stage of being reliant on our gadgets that we are not able to imagine our lives without it no matter how many disadvantages it may bring! even girls who are supposedly 'untech-savvy' cant live without technology! so technology, iloveyou! :D
ReplyDeletetoo many functions.. all muddled into one device. confusion. clumsy fingers twiddling at microscopic buttons. sorry.. i prefer having one device that does one thing at a time. keep it simple.
ReplyDeleteAnd for crying out loud! Can't you spell out his name at least??!! MJ does not do justice!! DAMN YOU JUSTIN!!!
theres always pros and cons with the majos shift in technology and communication. we have bcome too reliant on these techy stuff for communicating that we often overlook the badside of it.
ReplyDeleteWell,we have constantly been feed with the pros of all this fancy gadgets, from the smart phones to the ultra portable netbook. I remember a line from the movie 'Army Daze'(Justin if you have not seen it, please go to the nearest DVD rental store and get one) when Kenny was jesting that Ah Beng probably had 'the internet' in his locker. Apparently in 1996 having a handphone was already so out of the ordinary. But now you see primary school kids with thier IPHONES that allows them to go online anytime and anywhere within the 3G network. How times have changed.
ReplyDeleteActually i saw Army Daze...was quite entertaining...tho the movie was shot pretty crappy. yeah out of the whole unit just one guy had a phone that everyone wanted to use right?
ReplyDeleteI think that in this day and age, people are putting too much faith in their gadgets, and relying too much on them. Take for eg the Tammy NYP incident which occurred about 3 years ago. She recorded perhaps a wee bit too much private info in her phone and look what happened when the phone got stolen? Sex acts with her boyfriend spread all over the internet and became the most talked-about thing in SG at that time.
ReplyDeleteYes gadgets these days do indeed make our lives that much easier. However, trust no one, trust nothing. Just as much as we can infiltrate into other people's lives and other worlds, they can infiltrate into ours too.
i have to agree that technology have made us became too over dependent. imagine if we do not have the gadgets such as internet access and handphones, will people like us still be able to communicate effectively?
ReplyDeletecommunication technology was once helpful to us, increasing the accesibility and aiding on communication between people. however, people have been abusing the technology and became too over reliant. which sadly turned out to be not too good an outcome to totally benefit the society and people
Definitely agree that we all cannot live without technology, especially our hand phones and computers. We are so dependent on them that they are somewhat a part of us. For me if I don't have my handphone with me i'd feel reeaallly uncomfortable.
ReplyDeleteConvergence is definitely a good thing. It really helps us to multi task especially in a fast paced lifestyle such as that we live in Singapore. I think communication technologies have really advanced and have really proven to be useless to man.
ReplyDeleteFor me its definitely more pros! I can sit at home & get my job done ;) & no extra charges for all the hours we talk on skype. (lol)
ReplyDeleteUpto a certain point, you have control over things - i know how to maintain my laptop & i try not to lose my phone :p but what if someone robs you or your internet connection is down?? These are things beyond your control & it does make me feel pretty handicapped at times. Just make the best use of it & if you're gonna use modern tech, might as well learn how you can protect yourself, your files etc.
...& while it may be romantic to recieve a handwritten note by post, I think I'd prefer a phone call anyday. I guess the convergence is great for impatient people like me :)
I feel it depends on the how expose to technology the individual is as they were growing up. For me, and for most of us, technology had been surrounding us since the day we were born and so, we probably are unable to imagine going on our daily activities without it. People who do not have access to it like us though might not find any difference, and might even find it disorientating and a hassel to have to use technology to go about their daily lives.
ReplyDeleteIt is definitely a pro to me though!
when my mobile first went AWOL (my friend took the liberty to lose it for me on holiday in launie) I know i was just devastated - all my contacts in hobart were gone! i had no way of keeping in touch with my classmates and friends there, and i didn't have everyone on fb! the convergence into a single mode of communication probably caused my degeneration into a tech-reliant individual. thankfully, as most of my friends would note with much disbelief, in response i decided to not get a new phone when i got back here. for which i remained uncontactable for a long time, haha.
ReplyDeletei think i've somehow become really dependent especially on handphones. although i know i can live without it, i just can't imagine losing all my contacts which are saved in my phone. i remembered before i got my very first handphone, memorizing my friends' contact number was no difficulty at all, in fact, i was pretty good at it. but given a handphone, i have to admit, my memory is probably failing me, especially coming to remembering contacts. i guess we just over rely on our gadgets. (:
ReplyDeleteI can't say how much I'm a gadget person really. I need my gadgets to survive, mainly my blackberry, macbook, ipod touch. Without them I feel lost like something's missing. I am also proud to say I've never lost any of my gadgets before, yes I am paranoid about losing something so dear to me especially when I've so much important things all stored within them.
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely made life a whole lot more interesting and convenient for that matter.(:
Your style is very unique in comparison to other folks I have read stuff from. I appreciate you for posting when you've got the opportunity, Guess I'll just book mark this page.
